Nga Kaumatua
NGA KAUMATUA PROGRAMME
Up to three hundred and fifty Kaumatua, including those visited on their respective Marae
throughout the North Island, have participated in a number of Te Waka Pu Whenua activities over the past ten years. Visits have been made to Te Papa, Waikato and Whanganui Museums and other places of cultural and historical significance.
The programme also provides a health component where a health plan is developed for each individual. The kaumatua who attend the programme, use the opportunity to mingle, share their memoirs, socialise and continue their learning.
The programme recognises the important role of Kaumatua as Caretakers of Maori history and stories that are embedded in the foundations of the area. The community benefits by having in its midst a number of elders who generously share their knowledge.
Some of the local schools have availed themselves of the opportunity to visit and enjoy the company of the Kaumatua at the Centre.
These Kaumatua make meaningful contribution to the knowledge society in their willingness to pass on their stories to their families. We are currently in the process of developing a Kaumatua communications strategy to allow them greater access to their whanau and particularly their mokopuna, via the internet.
The Kaumatua have expressed a keen interest in learning computer skills and technology.
Te Waka Pu Whenua is currently pursuing means to facilitate this project.
